1848-2023

In honor of the 175th anniversary of the constitutional revision in 1848, artists William Rosewood and Daan van Velsen, commissioned by the House of Representatives of the States General, have completed the artwork ‘1848-2023’.

On October 26th, the House of Representatives commemorated the 175th anniversary of the Constitution in its current form. To mark this 175th anniversary, artists William Rosewood and Daan van Velsen delivered the artwork ‘1848-2023’. This artwork was unveiled on October 16, 2023, and has been available for public viewing in the States Passage of the House of Representatives of the States General since then.

The work measures 2.5 – 3 meters and consists of thirty canvases. The artists have created a composite portrait of Rudolph Thorbecke, the man who, with his committee, made the constitutional revision possible in 1848. On twenty-three canvases, symbols can be seen referring to the 23 fundamental rights of Chapter 1 of the Constitution.
